Q&A About ACDF:

What is ACDF?

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgery performed through a small incision in the front of the neck. The surgeon removes a damaged or herniated disc and any bone spurs pressing on the spinal cord or nerve roots, then fills the empty disc space with a bone graft or spacer. A small plate and screws are often added to hold the vertebrae in place while they fuse into one solid bone.

What conditions can be treated with ACDF?

ACDF is commonly used to treat cervical herniated discs, cervical stenosis, bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, cervical radiculopathy, and cervical myelopathy when conservative care has not provided relief or when the spinal cord is at risk.

How is ACDF performed?

Working from the front of the neck lets the surgeon reach the disc by gently moving the muscles, windpipe, and esophagus aside rather than cutting through the neck muscles. After the disc is removed and the nerves are decompressed, a spacer is placed to restore the normal disc height. Many patients go home the same day or the next day.

Symptoms Indicating the Need for ACDF:

  • Arm Pain: Pain that radiates from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
  • Numbness and Weakness: Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms or hands.
  • Loss of Coordination: Clumsy hands, trouble with fine motor tasks, or balance problems.
  • Persistent Neck Pain: Neck pain that does not improve with physical therapy, medication, or injections.

ACDF Benefits:

  • Relief of pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Reduced arm pain, numbness, and weakness.
  • Stabilization of the treated segment of the cervical spine.
  • A small incision and a short hospital stay for most patients.
