Q&A About Brain Trauma:

What is Brain Trauma?

Brain trauma, or traumatic brain injury (TBI), is damage to the brain caused by a blow, jolt, or penetrating injury to the head. Injuries range from mild concussions to severe injuries that cause bleeding, bruising, or swelling of the brain.

What types of brain injuries are there?

Common types include concussions, contusions (bruising of the brain), skull fractures, and hematomas, which are collections of blood between the skull and the brain. A chronic subdural hematoma can develop slowly in older adults, sometimes weeks after a minor fall.

What are the common symptoms of Brain Trauma?

Symptoms include headache, confusion, memory problems, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, and seizures. Some symptoms appear right away, while others develop over hours or days.

When should I seek emergency care?

If you or someone else has a head injury with loss of consciousness, confusion, repeated vomiting, seizures, or weakness, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

How is Brain Trauma treated?

Mild injuries are usually treated with rest and monitoring. More serious injuries may require hospital care, imaging, and medication to control swelling and pressure. Surgery may be needed to remove a blood clot, repair a skull fracture, or relieve pressure on the brain, often through a craniotomy.

Symptoms Indicating the Need for Brain Trauma Treatment:

  • Persistent Headaches: Headaches that continue or worsen after a head injury.
  • Confusion or Memory Problems: Difficulty thinking clearly or remembering.
  • Weakness or Numbness: Weakness, numbness, or poor coordination on one side of the body.
  • Imaging Findings: Bleeding, a skull fracture, or swelling seen on a CT or MRI scan.

Brain Trauma Treatment Benefits:

  • Prompt evaluation of head injuries with advanced imaging.
  • Surgical removal of blood clots when needed.
  • Relief of pressure on the brain.
  • Coordinated follow-up care during recovery.
