What is Balloon Kyphoplasty?
Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures. A small balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra and inflated to create a space and help restore the height of the bone. The balloon is then removed and the space is filled with bone cement, which hardens to stabilize the fracture.
How is it different from vertebroplasty?
In vertebroplasty, bone cement is injected directly into the fractured vertebra. Kyphoplasty adds the balloon step first, which creates a cavity for the cement and may help correct some of the collapse in the vertebra.
How is Balloon Kyphoplasty performed?
Using X-ray guidance, the surgeon passes a thin, hollow needle through a small incision in the back into the fractured vertebra. The balloon is inflated, removed, and the cavity is filled with bone cement. Most patients go home the same day.
