Q&A About ALIF:
What is ALIF?
Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) is a spinal fusion performed through an incision in the lower abdomen. Approaching the spine from the front gives the surgeon direct access to the disc space in the lower back without cutting through the large muscles of the back. The damaged disc is removed and replaced with an implant filled with bone graft, which helps the vertebrae fuse together.
What conditions can be treated with ALIF?
ALIF is used to treat degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, recurrent disc herniation, collapsed disc spaces, and some spinal deformities, most often at the lowest levels of the lumbar spine.
How is ALIF performed?
You lie on your back while an access surgeon works alongside the spine surgeon to move abdominal organs and blood vessels safely aside. The disc is removed and a large interbody implant is placed to restore disc height and alignment. Screws or a plate may be added for stability, sometimes with additional support placed from the back.
Symptoms Indicating the Need for ALIF:
- Chronic Low Back Pain: Pain in the lower back that persists despite conservative treatment.
- Leg Pain: Pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates into the buttocks or legs.
- Instability: A slipped vertebra or abnormal movement between vertebrae.
- Disc Collapse: Loss of disc height that narrows the openings for the nerves.
ALIF Benefits:
- The back muscles are left undisturbed.
- Large implants restore disc height and spinal alignment.
- Indirect relief of pressure on compressed nerves.
- A stable foundation for a solid fusion.
