Q&A About Cervical Myelopathy:

What is Cervical Myelopathy?

Cervical myelopathy is a condition in which the spinal cord in the neck is compressed. Because the spinal cord carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body, this pressure can affect the arms, hands, legs, and balance. It most often develops gradually with age-related changes in the spine.

What causes Cervical Myelopathy?

The most common cause is cervical spondylosis, the wear-and-tear changes of aging that include degenerating discs, bone spurs, and thickened ligaments that narrow the spinal canal. Herniated discs, injuries, rheumatoid arthritis, and tumors can also compress the spinal cord.

What are the common symptoms of Cervical Myelopathy?

Symptoms include clumsy hands, difficulty with fine motor tasks such as buttoning a shirt or writing, numbness or tingling in the hands, neck pain or stiffness, weakness in the arms or legs, and problems with balance or walking. In advanced cases, bladder or bowel control can be affected.

How is Cervical Myelopathy treated?

Mild cervical myelopathy may be monitored closely with regular exams and imaging. Because myelopathy often progresses, surgery is frequently recommended to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and help prevent further damage. Options include anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), cervical disc replacement, and posterior procedures such as laminectomy and fusion.

Symptoms Indicating the Need for Cervical Myelopathy Treatment:

  • Hand Clumsiness: Dropping objects or trouble with buttons, writing, or other fine tasks.
  • Balance Problems: Unsteady walking or a feeling of being off balance.
  • Numbness: Numbness or tingling in the hands or arms.
  • Weakness: Weakness in the arms or legs.

Cervical Myelopathy Treatment Benefits:

  • Relief of pressure on the spinal cord.
  • Helps prevent further neurological decline.
  • Possible improvement in hand function, balance, and walking.
  • A treatment plan tailored to your condition.
